Jury says johnson & johnson used cancer-causing ingredients, orders company to pay $72 million to cancer victim

Cancer causing ingredients used by Johnson and Johnson

Johnson & Johnson, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of medical devices, pharmaceutical goods and consumer packaged goods, recently admitted to including cancer-causing ingredients in their products. Now Johnson & Johnson has been ordered to pay $72 million in damages after a jury found that the company’s talc-based products resulted in the wrongful death of a Missouri woman.

Jacqueline Fox, the victim, was 59 years old when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. After Fox died last year at the age of 62, doctors said that her death was caused by the cancer.

The attorneys for the victim’s family had argued that Fox’s use of certain Johnson & Johnson products, including baby powder and Shower to Shower, had led to her contracting ovarian cancer. In fact, said the family’s lawyers, Fox used many Johnson & Johnson products for more than 35 years.

The issue in the case was whether Johnson & Johnson was negligent in failing to do anything about their potentially dangerous products. The attorneys for the Fox family argued at trial that the manufacturer “knew as far back as the 1980s of the risk and lied to both the public and government regulatory agencies instead of actually fixing the problem and making the products safe for consumption.

Expert witnesses testified at the trial and said that they had found a strong link between talc powder, which was used in Johnson & Johnson products, and incidences of ovarian cancer.

Ultimately the jury ruled in favor of the plaintiffs and found Johnson & Johnson liable for fraud, negligence and conspiracy.
