Pistachio distributor issues product recall after salmonella outbreak

A major distributor of pistachios in the U.S., Canada and Mexico recently announced that it would be issuing a recall of several products due to a Salmonella outbreak.
Wonderful Pistachios, which is located in California, said that it was voluntarily recalling a number of products, including Roasted No Salt In Shell Pistachios, Roasted Salt and Pepper In Shell Pistachios and Roasted Sweet Chili Pistachios. The FDA provides a comprehensive list of all of the products that should be disposed of or returned to grocery stores.
The recall was issued after reports emerged of multiple people suffering serious illnesses after consuming the pistachios. The outbreak of Salmonella has reportedly affected at least 11 people in nine states, including Connecticut, Virginia, Alabama, Georgia, Minnesota, Michigan, North Dakota, Arizona and Washington. At this time, none of the illnesses have resulted in death, although two of the affected individuals did have to be hospitalized.
Salmonella is a bacterial infection that can cause food poisoning. Some of the negative health effects of Salmonella poisoning include fever, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In the worst cases, Salmonella can result in death – particularly among individuals who are already ill or in poor health.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued a statement warning consumers to be careful about eating the affected pistachios because the products tend to have a long shelf life. Anyone who has one of the defective products in their home should immediately return it to the grocery store or throw it away.
