What are the Requirements for Motorcycle Insurance in Essex, Hudson, Middlesex, Union and across NJ?
According to New Jersey State Law, all motorcyclists must maintain a minimum of $15,000 in liability insurance. Failing to do this puts you at risk for stiff fines, suspension or revocation of your motorcycle license for up to one year and community service.
It’s not unusual to buy the minimum policy; it costs less money. Some people hear the low premium quote and buy the policy. This is a bad idea, says Mr. Prince. Buying the minimum policy gives you the least amount of insurance coverage. Think about that.
Motorcyclists know the dangers associated with riding; motorists never see you and critical, even fatal, accidents happen every day throughout NJ. If you get into an accident with an uninsured or underinsured motorist, the most you can get from your own carrier is the amount of liability coverage you purchased.
Look at it this way: If you purchase the maximum amount of liability insurance you could have between $250,000 and $500,000 at your disposable in the case of an accident. If you have an accident that is not your fault, you can sue the other driver’s insurance company for the maximum amount of their liability coverage. If they bought significant coverage, that’s great news! If they bought the minimum ($15,000) or worse – they are uninsured – you will be out of luck. You’ll have to turn to your own policy for financial compensation.
So that’s $15,000 from the other guy; and, if you bought the same minimum $15,000 policy, you could get a maximum of $30,000. (If they have no insurance, you are looking at only $15,000 in compensation! How far would $15,000 to $30,000 go if you or someone you love is in a catastrophic motorcycle accident? Not very far at all.
You can buy a liability policy valued at $250,000 to $500,000 (depending on the carrier’s max policy offerings) for less than a dollar a day in most cases!

Why Cheaper is always “Less When It Comes to Motorcycle Insurance
You’ve seen and heard the commercials from insurance carriers who vow to save you money on your motorcycle insurance. Some even do it in “15 minutes or less. It’s critically important for you to know that when you pay less, you get less when it comes to insurance. Period. In fact, this is the reality with most things we purchase. If you only want to spend $2,000 for a motorcycle, you will get the bike you pay for, right? You won’t find a brand new Harley for two grand.
Same goes for insurance: the carriers can charge you less because they shave off coverage. The easiest way to lower a policy premium is to reduce liability coverage. Sure, you’ll save a couple of hundred dollars on your premium. Will it be worth it when you are in an accident? The difference between the minimum liability coverage ($15,000) and the maximum ($500,000) is clearly more than the couple of hundred you spent on the better policy.
Mr. Prince has been fighting for the rights of motorcyclists in New Brunswick, Newark, Clark and throughout New Jersey for over 25 years. He is on the Board of Directors of Rider Education of the State of New Jersey and is a contributor to the American Motorcycle Association.
