For More Than 16 Years, the Keyport Landfill Contamination Has Raised Serious Health Concerns

The inactive Keyport Sanitary Landfill is located at the former Aeromarine Industrial Park in Monmouth County. The site has a long history of environmental concerns, including issues surrounding landfill closure and contamination.

NJ Spotlight News reported that testing conducted in 2026 found benzene and vinyl chloride above applicable state standards in groundwater samples, along with elevated levels of metals such as lead, cobalt, and arsenic. Earlier site investigations conducted as far back as 16 years ago had also identified contaminants of concern, the source reported.

In recent months, concern has grown among people who live or previously lived in Keyport and neighboring Union Beach. NJ Spotlight reported in July 2026 that more than 400 cancer cases had been reported by residents in the two communities. Recent Updates on Keyport Landfill Environmental Exposure Investigations, and What Findings Could Mean for Your Claim

NJDEP continues to investigate conditions at and around the former Aeromarine site and Keyport landfill. The agency has conducted three rounds of surface-water sampling in Raritan Bay, Chingarora Creek, and other tributaries adjacent to the landfill and Aeromarine site, using 24 monitoring stations under different tidal and weather conditions. According to NJDEP, the purpose of that testing is to evaluate whether the landfill may be contributing contaminants to nearby surface waters. The agency has said the results of that sampling have not yet been finalized.

In a July 31, 2026, status update, the agency said its preliminary review of available environmental data continued to indicate that people were not being exposed to contamination from the site through drinking water or groundwater-related vapor intrusion. NJDEP also stated that Keyport’s public water supply remains in compliance with state and federal drinking water standards. 

Because the investigation is still developing, on August 11, 2026, NJDEP announced plans to collect additional groundwater and soil-gas samples at at least 16 locations in Keyport and Union Beach. The agency said the testing is intended to determine whether groundwater or soil-gas contamination could create a vapor-intrusion pathway that exposes people to vapors inside homes or other structures. Thirteen of the planned sampling locations are in Keyport and three are in Union Beach, with additional sampling possible as the investigation continues.

Those preliminary findings do not necessarily resolve the concerns being raised by residents. NJDEP is still reviewing independent testing, investigating possible contaminant migration, and examining whether additional exposure pathways may exist.
