Fall foliage is gorgeous, until you slip & fall

Yellow, orange and red leaves are part of the wonders of having four seasons; in New Jersey, we are lucky enough to be able to enjoy a couple of months of autumn. However, when rainstorms cause leaves to fall on sidewalks, in parking lots, etc., wet leaves are no longer pretty. They are accidents waiting to happen.
Even dry leaves on wet grass can become a serious hazard. Slip and fall or trip and fall accidents often cause extremely severe and painful injuries including broken bones, lacerations, head and spinal injuries.

Business owners have a duty to inspect and maintain sidewalks including the removal of snow, ice and other debris – including leaves – that can cause a slip & fall accident. Laws regarding clearing debris vary for owners of single family homes condo associations and multi-family dwellings.  That being said, people have a responsibility to watch where they are walking and take preventive measures to keep themselves safe, as well.
The bottom line is to be mindful of where you are walking. And, don’t forget about driving hazards, too. Wet leaves on slick roadways can cause cars to inadvertently slide causing accidents.
